Bao Cha — Chinese tea in TbilisiBao Cha — Chinese tea in Tbilisi8 upcoming · Tea & Cacao ceremony · Meditation · Yoga · Sound healing

Here, you’ll hear Zen music in the rhythm of human breathing, where silence is just as important as sound. It is based on the repertoire of the komusō, the “monks of emptiness and nothingness” who wandered around Japan several centuries ago.

What happens

  • First, there will be an introduction to the shakuhachi and hotchiku, as well as to Zen Buddhism and its connection with these flutes. A short meditation will follow before the listening session.
  • The concert is divided into two parts with a short break. The first features bright, rhythmic music played on a short shakuhachi; the second features drawn-out, resonant music played on long shakuhachi and hotchiku, with a deep, rich sound.
  • At the end, you’ll be able to ask questions and discuss the music. Compared with the performances in March, several new pieces will be played, and three flutes will be used instead of two.

Who leads it

Performer: Mikhail Zybin.

Good to know

  • The event is donation-based. Participants in the tea gathering on the day of the event receive a 5% discount on the entire range of products.
  • The flutes have an expressive and varied timbre; their sound is described as natural, rough-edged and lively.
  • This is not musical accompaniment to a tea ceremony; there will be no esotericism or electronic sound effects.
